[Xingjiang]Woodcut New Year Paintings

Xinjiang woodcut New Year paintings flourished in Daoguang and Xianfeng years of the Qing Dynasty.At that time, the production of New Year pictures reached its peak. There were three large and seven small woodcut New Year pictures workshops in the county alone. Yishengcheng (formerly known as Maoshengcheng) alone printed more than 100,000 woodcut New Year pictures every year and sold them in northwestern provinces. In the countryside, there were also "Tianfucheng", "Jingji", "Guangqiantang", "Duwuliu", "Defengchang" and many other shops published New Year pictures. New Year pictures are mainly used for the Spring Festival posting: some posted on the door for the door god, some posted on the screen wall for the central scroll, banners, some posted on the utensils, and some posted on the cabinet and the wall. It is collectively referred to as folk New Year pictures. 

New Year paintings of characters appeared relatively late, most of which were in the late Qing Dynasty and early time of the Republic of China. There were many opera characters, and most of the paintings were bold, unrestrained and plain. It is based on the line plate with great effort in using the knife. Woodcut New Year pictures are usually constituted by five colors. There are also seven-color products---red, peach, medium yellow, pale purple, Berlin blue and green, which are mixed with some flour. It presents a pretty picture with some small black and white. After watching it, people suddenly feels like the strong local opera. Woodcut New Year Paintings in other places generally do not need the color blue, while the New Year Paintings in Jiangzhou is mixed with blue, showing more imposing and stern posture.
